Music Video Director Research

I am inspired by his use of various camera shots in his work. He works really well at doing shots which create a single big impact. He also has good narrative to each of his videos, they all have a clear narrative which you can understand, they aren't over the top or complex because he can create that big effect without over complicating the video. I also like the way he creates his videos to suit each individual artist this shows his wide range of skills and capability. He does stick to more of the R&B, upbeat and fast genre becauase this is what he is best at creating. However he can still making an amazing video for a different kind of artist such as Enrique Iglesias and Austin Mahone.

I decieded to look at a music director for inspiration for my video to get more of a feel for how a director makes there videos and to see if there is any similarities in their work. I have anyalised certain videos but never look at the person behind the video directing it so I felt like it would be worth the research to look into it.

Collin Tilley

Collin Tilley is an amazing video director in my eyes, he has achived so much espically with him only being 25. He has worked with every famous singers and made award winning videos. I like the quaility in his video because they are clear and he also puts a lot of effort into making them. He plans out the video to every little detail and always manages to come up with new amazing ideas to keep things different to each artist and their styles.

Collin Tilleys music videos are made so that they look like photoshoots, they're all really sharp and professional looking. These are some screenshots from his videos that I felt show off his skills. You will be able to notice that the quaility is amazing and that each one is video is different but you can still see certain similarities. I chose music video which each give a different look to his work, one centering on postioning, one of dramatic effects and the last on editing.

Here he has chosen to use a blue filter which could be to show a strong cool powerful look because both people in this shot look powerful. Their shots are also powerful and attention grabbing.

I added the rule of thirds to the first still image and you can see that Collin has concentrated on having everything symmetrical with her in the central third so that she is the main focus point in the frame. The second still image also has a symmetrical look to it having the lighting set up exactly so it will create this symmetrical effect.

Peter Greenway

Peter Greenway is a film director who also looks at making images look like art, making them symmetrical. It gives an art look to these images especially when they're made into still shots so that you can look into the detail more. He worked on films in around the 80s such as ZOO, The Cook, The Theif, His Wife & Her Lover, and most importantly - A Draughtsman's Contract; a film written about shot composition.

He will have gone and location scouted these places before filming so that he knows that his filming location will be symmetrical. This kind of filming will have taken lots of preparation because he needs to get it exactly right.

Here you can see Collins dramatic effects, he has chosen nature for his concentration point, all of this music video is centred on creating a dramatic nature look.

Here he has concentrated on editing, using monochrome filters and lens flares to try and create an old style love
