Indie Music Video Research
The Kooks- Naive

Here we have found music videos which we think fit under the indie genre. Indie music is a hard genre to define because indie stands for individual therefore they don’t want to be like anyone else they want to just be themselves and not influenced by a majority like pop music. However indie music artists are inspired by each other therefore can end up making videos which are like each other and making music which sounds similar.

Internet Information

Indie music isnt a difinite style of music, but most indie bands are influenced by each other causing a similar sound. the sound is melodic, the instruments are simple but well textured. usually includes a simple but origanal guitar riff, another guitar riff layered to complement it, bass doing the same, simple drum beat (but fitting the song well) either a keyboard or violin or something to bring out the underlying melody, and soft vocals, usually well harmonized.

With this music video you can tell that there isn’t a massive music label behind the production because the quality of the video isn’t very strong. However this adds to the narrative in the music video so doesn’t have a large impact. The video is about the artist trying to find his girlfriend and is singing about how she is naïve about the things that she is doing. There are various close ups of the artists however he doesn’t have direct contact with the camera/audience. This makes it feels as if you’re moving where he is and following him in finding his girlfriend rather than him singing to you. The lighting is dark to enhance the fact that they are in a club, more controlled lighting could have been added to brighten the video slightly to help see what is happening clearly. However the lighting does add to the moody effect. The artist isn’t posed in anyway in this video, he is shown with messy hair, wearing day to day clothing and showing his annoyed facial expressions. This shows that he is a normal human being which is how indie artists like to be shown because they do not like to fall into the mainstream which then a lot of it becomes about the appearance and making money.

The Kooks are an English indie pop band formed in Brighton, East Sussex, in 2004. Formed by Luke Pritchard (vocals/guitar), Hugh Harris (lead guitar), Paul Garred (drums), and Max Rafferty (bass guitar), the lineup of the band remained constant until 2008 and the departure of Rafferty. Dan Logan was drafted in as a temporary replacement, until Peter Denton joined the band on a permanent basis in October 2008. Arctic Monkeys- Fluorescent Adolescent

This music video again doesn’t have amazing quality because these indie bands are usually signed to smaller record labels or they produce their music themselves. The narrative in this video is quite hard to understand, to work out what it meant I used the title which means when children grow up too fast and get messed up by their surroundings. The start of this music video is just a big fight in a derelict background which adds to the unhappiness of the fight. Then further on in the video it goes onto showing the two main people in the fight together as children and one of the men saying to the other how did it end up like this. This shows that something went wrong along the way and now all they want to do is hurt each other which one of them ends up killing the other at the end of the video.
